  • Protect Your Grout and Tile This Winter

    grout cleaner

It’s winter time – the season of harsh weather (for many regions of the United States).  Snow, salt, mud… you name it, and it will be on your tile floors. These dirty and harsh substances can make your tile and grout go through quite the beating. The wetness and dirt can discolor your grout/tile and potentially even loosen your tiles, and the salt can eat away at your tiles and grout. Not to mention, the outside temperature itself can cause your grout and/or tile to potentially crack, break, or move. During the winter, natural stone tile can easily crack or chip when water from snow, ice, or rain gets trapped in the grout or cracks.

So, what can you do to save and protect your beautiful tile work (especially outside tile work) during the harsh winter season? Preventative grout and tile care! When you use the proper grout and tile sealer, your tile (whether it’s porcelain or stone) and grout lines will have a shield to protect them against wetness, extreme temperatures, dirt, snow, ice, and plenty of foot traffic. If you have a lot of stone tile work outside, stone tile is pretty porous, so they have a higher risk of being damage from ice and snow.

Grout Shield offers different sealers that can help keep water from seeping into the tile and grout lines. Grout Shield offers the following sealers:

Grout Shield Clear Sealer – This clear-colored sealer protects newly laid tile and grout from becoming stained, dirty, and discolored.

Grout Shield Color Sealer – This penetrating sealer revitalizes and restores color to the grout. This sealer colors and seals in one product.

Grout Shield Enhancer Seal –  Our enhancer seal is used for ceramic, slate, or Mexican tile floor to make the tiles look vibrant and new again.

Looking to protect your tile this winter? Act now! Keep your stones and grout looking great! Grout Shield sealers can protect your grout from becoming dirty, discolored, and broken.  Let our Grout Shield team help you choose a product that will best work for your space and tile type. • Get Help Passing a Restaurant Inspection with Grout Shield Cleaners, Sealers

    grout cleaner

Keeping your home clean is a no-brainer, but keeping a restaurant clean is ESSENTIAL. Whenever you’re preparing and serving food to the public, everything and anything needs to be clean. From top to bottom, equipment, rooms, appliances, utensils, etc., must be clean and sterile…even humans need to wash up before encountering food and dishware. If things are not clean, germs can spread, and guests can get sick. Unlike your home, restaurant owners and managers must be very concerned of the cleanliness of their restaurants, because they get inspected. Failing a health inspection can do a lot of harm for a business.

Of course, customers care about quality service and food, but they do pay attention to the cleanliness of an establishment. Would you want to eat somewhere that had dirty floors? Crumbs everywhere? Stains? Spills? Rats? Probably not.

For this article, we wanted to discuss tile floors in restaurants, whether its in the dining area or in the kitchen. Both areas receive a lot of foot traffic; the kitchen floor also runs the risk of getting stained and dirty due to spills and splatters. Despite scrubbing and moping away, the tile can become dull and the grout will become darker over time. Why? Well, grout acts like a sponge and it absorbs any liquid/dirt it comes in contact. Your beautiful white grout could now look very brown. Despite how much you clean it, it may not be enough, and it could look dirty. The solution? A proper tile and grout cleaner and sealer can help your restaurant’s tiles and grout look pristine year-round.

Restaurant floors can be difficult to maintain considering guests and staff drag in a lot of outside dirt, water, debris; the kitchen has its own messes that can dirty grout and tile like grease. Over time, the grease and dirt build up can make a restaurant look old, dirty, and grimy. No one would want food served from a place like that!

With Grout Shield grout cleaners and grout sealers, you can finally remove all the dirt and stains from the tile and seal them, so it will be harder for them to become dirtier. This means, you will have an easier time maintaining them throughout the year. No more scrubbing for hours! Your employees can spend more time doing other things besides scrubbing or mopping the floor.

By using Grout Shield’s products, your restaurant will be able to pass the sanitary standards, so you won’t risk paying a fine, losing customers, or even shutting down. Dirty floors can attract bugs and rodents (which is definitely a sanitary no-no) so cleaning them regularly with quality products is critical.

Here is an example of some of Grout Shield’s products that can turn your restaurant’s kitchen from drab to fab.

Grout Shield Color Sealer – This product allows restaurant owners/staff to match or change the color of the existing grout without having to remove any of the grout. With this product, any color is possible. It also protects the grout from absorbing dirt or liquid, since it is sealed. You can even change the whole look of a room with a grout color change!

Grout Shield Maintenance Cleaner – If your restaurant floor grout is dirty and you’re happy with the same color, this cleaner is what you need for the job. Dilute the cleaner in water, damp your mop and towel dry.

Grout Shield Restoration Kit – For restaurants owners, this may be your best bet. This kit is the best way to fully restore a floor. Grout Shield offers seven different package kits to help restore the look of grout. Each kit’s contents vary depending of the size floor you intend to clean. The kits include: cleaner, sealant, colors, chamois, brushes, and instructions.

Although you need more than a clean floor to pass a restaurant health inspection, Grout Shield products can definitely clean and restore your floors and have them shining again. Tired of looking at your “old” and “dirty” looking kitchen? But in reality, it’s actually not old or dirty, right? So, why does it look so bad? Your grout. There’s a really good chance your dirty and stained grout is what’s making your once beautiful kitchen or bathroom look aged or unclean. Soap. Vinegar. Bleaches. You’ve tried it all, yet, your stone or porcelain tile work looks like you’ve never lifted a sponge to it the entire time you’ve been living in the house. Maybe you’ve pondered remodeling the entire room, just so the tile will look better. Don’t! Save your money! If you use the right grout cleaning and tile products, you can get your rooms looking like “brand new” again.

Grout Shield’s grout cleaners and grout sealers lift tough stains and dirt from the porous grout, and can recolor the grout for that clean and new look you’ve been missing. With Grout Shield products, there is less “work” and “maintenance” required to make your tile look great again. If you don’t properly take care of your tile or grout lines, your grout will change color (brown or black) and the tiles will fade and lose their color, brightness, and shininess.

Even if your grout and tile are a tad damaged from improper cleaning, don’t fret. You can still get them looking great again. Grout Shield offers grout cleaners that safely remove excess dirt or grease from the grout surface, as well as any previously applied grout sealer. The cleaner bonds to the grout. These cleaners are neutral pH-cleaners that are non-combustible and fast-acting. After using one of Grout Shield’s cleaners, it’s time to apply a Grout Shield sealer. With a sealer, it will be harder for the grout to get stained; the sealant keeps dirt and liquids from seeping into the grout’s pores. Grout Shield offers sealers in clear and colors. • Grout Care with Pets at Home

    pets and tile

For many homeowners, pets are part of their household and family. Unfortunately, these pets can make quite a mess on flooring; sometimes, dogs and cats can even do some damage to your beautiful floors. If you aren’t replacing your floors anytime soon, the next best thing you can do is purchase quality cleaning products to make your tile floors in your kitchen and bathroom look like you don’t even own a pet!

If you have stone, porcelain, or ceramic tile in your home, you’re probably in good shape. These types of tile don’t scratch easily. And, pet urine doesn’t affect or harm these types of tiles like it would say to a hardwood floor; however, your grout lines might be in rough shape.

There’s a good chance your dog or cat has accidentally relieved themselves on the floor before or dragged in dirt, mud, grass, or anything else from the outside onto your tiles and grout. Unfortunately, grout is porous and any liquid or solid they get on your grout will be absorbed and seep deep below the surface. Because of this, the grout can darken or change color completely. Normal soap and water won’t be able to truly get rid of what your pet left behind. Not only is this unsightly, it can become unsanitary for you and your loved ones to walk on.

If you believe your grout lines are compromised from any spills or accidents from your pets, you’re not alone, and there is a solution. By using proper grout cleaning and grout sealing products, you can transform your grout back to its original color. Grout Shield Grout and Tile Cleaner will remove all dirt and stains from the grout. Just use a mop to distribute the cleaner and allow the formula to saturate into the grout for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, scrub the area with a grout or bristle brush, followed by using a clean rag to wipe away any remaining cleaner.

Since you can’t prevent all accidents from happening with your pets, it’s best you seal your grout after you clean it as well, so it is harder for the grout to become dirty. Grout Shield’s Clear or Color Sealer protects the grout. The color seal allows you to change the color of the grout to any color you want.

If you are looking for an easy way to restore your grout from your pet’s messes without spending a ton of money, purchase Grout Shield grout cleaners and sealers. To learn more about or to purchase Grout Shield’s products, click here or call 1-800-631-0716.

  • Why Does Grout Crack

Unfortunately, grout can crack. Cracked grout is unsightly and can make your beautiful, finished bathroom or kitchen turn look old and unkempt. Why is this happening? If you want to truly find out why your grout is cracking, it’s best to get the area inspected; however, there are few common reasons as to why the grout is cracking in your home.

One reason that cracked grout happens is because of a weak grout structure. When too much liquid/water is in the grout mix, it causes tiny pinholes in the grout; after the grout dries, the grout is more susceptible to cracking because of these little holes. Cement also has to be at the “perfect” hydration level for the grout to be strong; too much water can make the grout weaker.

Another reason grout can crack is because of a thinset (glue) that’s applied over the mortar during installed. If not enough glue was applied, it will pull the tile away from the mortar and create air gaps under the tile. This will result in broken pieces of mortar, cracked grout, and broken tiles. If there isn’t enough glue beneath the tile, the tile will loosen over time, even by simply walking on it. When you walk on it, the tile will move up and down, which will also make the surrounding grout start to crack and crumble.

The reasons above show how cracked grout can be the result of improper installation; however overall, the major reason grout can crack is because the tile is moving. There could be a deflection in the flooring for the type of tile you have, or there has been trauma to the area.

If there is no expansion space around the perimeter of the tiled space, the walls will put pressure on the tile causing the tiles and grout to crack. You also need to make sure your tile has proper soft joints and expansion joints to prevent improper movement from happening that will result in grout cracking.

To fix cracked grout or improperly installed tiles and grout, you need to remove and properly install new tile; then, you can re-grout the floor. If it’s only one small area, you might not have to do over the entire floor or wall, but it’s best to get the area assessed.

Once the area has been repaired, make sure the grout is recessed (lying below the edge of the tiles). After the tile and grout are properly installed, It’s time to use a grout sealer to protect the grout from staining and absorbing dirt, water, and other liquids. If you just spent all this time fixing a tile area, you want it to look its best year round. Grout Shield sealers will keep your grout looking brand new. • Don’t Forget to Seal Your Grout!

    grout sealer

You just had your bathroom floor retiled. It looks perfect! You definitely want it to look this way forever. As the contractor finishes, you ask him if it needs to be sealed. There is a chance he may say, “No,” and there are a few reasons for this. One, he may have used an epoxy-based grout, which is a water-resistant material that doesn’t require a sealer. He may have used a grout that has a sealer in it. He may just personally feel the grout doesn’t need to be sealed. He may not feel like coming back. Or, he may tell you it needs to be sealed, but not yet.

You DO want to seal the grout. But after an installation, it is best to wait a bit to put a sealer on the area. You want to allow the new grout to cure 48 to 72 hours before sealing. Right before you seal, double check the entire area and make sure none of the grout lines aren’t cracked or compromised in any way.

The short time it takes to apply a grout sealer is something worth investing in. It’s a simple job. If you don’t apply a sealer, you run the risk of mold living in the grout or discolored and stained grout lines. That new bathroom floor you just had done? It could easily look old in a matter of days if not properly sealed. One small spill can ruin the entire look of the room.

The bathroom is home to so many different liquids and dirt that can compromise your grout, including: mud, water, mouthwash, toothpaste, makeup, perfume, and soap. By sealing your grout, you will preserve the color of the grout from these products. The grout sealer soaks into the grout creating a barrier against anything that comes in contact with the grout.

Depending on how much foot traffic goes on in your bathroom, you’ll want to reseal the area every six to 12 months.

Sealing grout is important. If you don’t, dirt and liquid stains may become permanent, and all that money and time that went into your bathroom floor was for, essentially nothing. Grout Shield sells grout sealers are penetrating sealers designed to revitalize and protect grout.  To learn more about these grout sealers, click here or call 1-800-631-0716 for pricing estimates and more information.

  • Clean Grout the Right Way

      grout cleaner

For whatever reason, the grout lines surrounding your tiles in your kitchen, bathroom, or pool area are dirty. Spills, dirt, water, mud – you name it – can cause your grout to look dirty and old over time. Even if you thoroughly wash and scrub your floor or shower, it still can look like you haven’t cleaned the area in years! Cleaning grout can be a pain. There is a lot of information out there about how to clean grout, and much of this information is misleading or just aren’t effective. Below, we will share with you some ineffective, but commonly suggested, grout cleaning tips, and what you should be doing instead. With the right products and methods, cleaning grout can be easier than ever.

Use Bleach – Bleach is often suggested as a cleaning solution for discolored grout. Although bleach can lighten the grout, it usually is only a temporary fix, and usually only works with white or light colored grout lines. Especially in the bathroom, mold and mildew will easily return to the area, despite using bleach. Bleach can actually damage the grout.

Use Vinegar –  Although using water and vinegar can work on cleaning the grout, it can take a long time to scrub the grout clean. Although the vinegar works, it can also damage the grout.

Since you don’t want to damage your grout, what is best to use? Grout Shield offers grout cleaners safely removes excess dirt or grease from the grout surface, as well as any previously applied grout sealer. The cleaner bonds to the grout. Grout Shield cleaners are neutral pH-cleaners that are non-combustible and fast-acting. After brushing the Grout Shield cleaner into the grout and letting the mixture sit for a few minutes, you are then able to easily wipe it away with a sponge. The grout will be clean as new.

To prevent this level of dirtiness from occurring again, it’s best to seal your grout after cleaning it. Grout Shield also offers clear and color grout sealers to protect your grout from future stains.

  • Choosing A Grout Color

    grout color

Designing your “dream” home or adding a few updates to certain rooms can be a very exciting process. The colors, appliances, tiles, furniture can really transform a space into something special.  One aspect of the décor, that is often overlooked, is the color of the grout that will be on the floor or back splash in between the tiles in your kitchen, bathroom, or out by the pool.

Grout has many functions; it locks titles together, it fills in spaces between stone and tiles, it prevents edges of tiles from chipping and cracking. However, it also is key to the design of a room. The color of a grout can change the whole look and feel of the room.

The grout color (on the floor, walls, backsplashes) should be selected with a purpose in mind; it should not be an afterthought. People have many options with the grout color – they can match the grout color to the tile, they can contrast it with the tile, or go with a neutral color. Each one of these choices can create a different look for a room. For example: by matching the colors, the grout line doesn’t show much giving the walls or floor a more seamless, fluid look; the room will look very sleek. If you want your tile to stand out, contrasting the grout color with the tile is the best option. With this option, the grout frames and highlights the tile. Many people choose a neutral color (gray, beige, tan); this is considered a “safe” choice; it isn’t too bold and the color matches different styles and colors of tile and everything else in the room.

At Grout Shield, we can match any color in the world to current grout in your home, or help you find a brand new color to update any room in your home. Some colors include: seaside sand, dove gray, fern, chocolate, Italian straw, bay leaf, lipstick, and many more! Check out more of our colors here. We can match paint brands like Sherwin Williams, Behr, Martha Stewart, Glidden, Benjamin More, leading grout brands, and more!
