  • How to Care for Your Grout and Tile This Winter

Winter is a harsh season as many states in the United Stated deal with frigid temperatures, ice, and snow. To protect ourselves from the elements, we wear heavy boots and clothing. Unfortunately, we, or guests in our homes, can drag a lot of unwanted things into our home like salt, mud, water, and snow. The salt, dirt, and water can easily seep into our grout lines and under our tiles, which can compromise or break them. The excess moisture can cause tile and grout to move, crack, or become dirty. And that’s just your inside tile! Outdoor tile and grout have to face the elements consistently.

It’s in your best interest to protect your grout and tile (inside and out) so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to replace a floor, path, or patio once the winter is over. The best way you can protect your grout lines and tile is to take care of them throughout the year. With the proper grout cleaner and sealer, your grout and tile will have a protected shield on them to keep liquids and other dirt from seeping through. A grout and tile sealer can help protect from excess moisture that causes cracks, breaks, and movement.

Some other preventative measures you can take are:

    • Wipe off/kick of snow from your shoes on a mat before entering the house. Ask your guests to do this, as well.
    • Keep your shoes, boots, socks, and outwear in one room only, so you’re only getting a smaller area wet.
    • Sweep, vacuum, and mop your floors regularly during the winter to pick up dirt, sand, and salt that gets dragged around the house.
    • Dry off your pet as soon as they get in the door.

To protect your tile and grout, you need a real grout sealer. Grout Shield offers a variety of sealers that can help keep water from seeping into the tile and grout lines.

Grout Shield Clear Sealer – This clear-colored sealer protects tile and grout from becoming stained, dirty, and discolored.

Grout Shield Color Sealer – This sealer revitalizes and restores color to the grout. This sealer colors and seals in one product. You can choose any color in the world! Changing the color of your grout can change the entire look of a room!

Grout Shield Enhancer Seal – The enhancer seal is used for ceramic, slate, or Mexican tile floor to make the tiles look vibrant and new again.

Before you seal your grout, you want to clean it thoroughly with a grout cleaner. Grout Shield Grout & Tile Deep Cleaner and Grout Shield Maintenance Cleaner will help you get deep stains out. These are also great to use to clean your tile and grout throughout and after the winter to keep germs and dirt from spreading.

Not only do the grout lines encounter your shoes and feet, they can come in contact with dirt, mud, food, liquids, pet urine, hair, leaves, dust, debris, etc. Grout is porous, which means whenever it will easily absorb liquids and other things that touch it. For example, if you spill milk, the grout will absorb the milk. Over time, your grout will change color and even start to smell from everything it has absorbed.

There’s a lot of things in your home to clean. Floors, windows, countertops, mirrors, toilets, showers, etc., so we understand that cleaning grout lines may get overlooked. Don’t ignore them any longer. Because grout it porous, it can cling onto bacteria and other germs, making you susceptible to sicknesses in your own home.

  • Benefits of Cleaning Your Grout and Tile

Why do you clean your home? Do you want it to look presentable and good for you and guests? Do you want it to smell nice? Do you want it to be germ-free? Whatever the reason, cleaning your home is important. There’s a lot of areas in the home to clean: toilets, counter tops, floors, windows, tables, etc. etc.; however, there’s a part of the house that is often forgotten: grout.

Your grout lines need to be cleaned as often as your tiles or any other item in your home. Grout is like a sponge, so it absorbs anything that touches it. From spilled milk to cat urine, grout will absorb anything, which makes it a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria.

So besides looking pretty, the other main benefit of cleaning your grout and tile is your health. When your home is clean, you have less of a chance of being sick. If there are bacteria floating around, you’re likely to pick up the germs.

If you dropped a piece of food on the kitchen floor and ate it or touched the floor with your hand and then rubbed your eyes, you just spread a lot of potential germs to your body. You could get a bacterial or fungal infection if you haven’t properly cleaned the floor.

Whether it’s the floor or counter, your grout lines and tiles are flat, which means lots of things can land on them including dust. You may not see the dust, but it can make you have allergies if there is too much built up in your home. Dust build up on tile and grout can keep bacteria on surfaces. Dust also invites dust miles, which excrete allergens that can irritate you.

In wetter areas of your home, like the bathroom, grout and tile can harbor mold and mildew, which can cause your body to have an allergic reaction. When it comes to mold and mildew, you should turn a fan on, open a window, and doors to air the room out after a bath or shower. Try to dry the room out as often as you can in between cleanings. Make sure your house isn’t overly humid, as well.

To avoid health problems in your own home, clean your tile and grout regularly. Grout Shield’s Maintenance Cleaner cleans stains and dirt off tile and grout. This cleaner has a neutral pH, so it isn’t harsh on your tiles or grout. This cleaner will keep your tile and grout renewed-looking and clean. To prevent allergens, fungi, and bacteria from  lingering on your floors, use Grout Shield’s  grout sealer to protect your grout and tile.

Grout Shield’s products can help your tile and grout look like new again while eliminating the bad stuff that can cause you and your loved ones to get sick.

  • Keep Your Grout Clean for the Kids

Kids make messes – it’s what they do! However, if we ignore these messes, they can breed germs and bacteria, especially if the messes get into the tile and grout. If you have a baby or toddler at home, you know they love to crawl, sit on the floor, and put anything in their mouth that fell on the floor (like a pacifier). With children around, it’s essential you make sure your grout and tile are clean year-round, so your little one isn’t picking up germs.

Grout is porous, so it absorbs basically everything it encounters. Grout is a good breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. When your child spills a drink or drops food or even if you’re walking through the house with shoes on, you’re spreading germs. Salmonella, listeria, and E.coli can easily spread in the kitchen or bathroom from foot traffic or spills. A 2014 study by Aston University in England revealed that bacteria transfers on dropped food from tile surfaces.

The more (and better) you clean your tile and grout, the less bacteria there will be to spread.

if your floors haven’t been thoroughly cleaned in a while, you want to use a trusted grout and tile cleaner to remove dirt, mold, bacteria mildew and stains from the grout. Grout Shield’s Grout & Tile Deep Cleaner lifts deep stains and is a great product to use if your floors haven’t received a good cleaning in a while. You will see your grout changing back to its original color. Throughout the rest of the year, you can use Grout Shield’s Maintenance Cleaner, which cleans stains and is good to use on a regular basis.

After you clean, you want to seal your grout, as well. A grout sealer will protect future stains from your kid’s sippy cup seeping into the grout lines. You should try and seal your grout once or twice a year – over time, sealers break down due to the amount of people walking on it. If your grout and tile are sealed, the cleaning process will also be easier for you. Pick up a bottle of Grout Shield’s clear grout sealer to protect your grout and tile.

If your grout and tile are clean, you will feel a lot better about your little one crawling, playing and putting things in his/her mouth off the floor.

Grout shield also sells grout brushes and chamois cloths that help easily remove dirt and debris from the grout without wrecking it.

Grout Shield’s grout cleaners and grout sealers can help your floors (and kids) stay clean! For more information on Grout Shield products, click our grout products page, or call toll free at 1-800-631-0716.

  • Use Real Grout Cleaner and Not Regular Household Cleaners

You just looked at the tile in your kitchen and bathrooms. Gross. They need a good scrubbing. You go into the cabinets and pull out a bunch of cleaning supplies. You get your mop and sponge out and start scrubbing away. You scrub, you scrub, and you scrub. The tile doesn’t look shiny and the grout is still dirty. How can this be happening?

Well, you’re probably not using the right grout and tile cleaner. In fact, you may be using chemicals that actually harm your tile and grout lines. At Grout Shield, we make quality grout cleaners and grout sealers, so we wanted to share with you how not to clean your grout. The following are some chemicals/cleaners that can be wreaking havoc on your tile and grout.

    • Homemade cleaners with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can help clean your tile and grout, but they won’t work well at lifting deep stains or dark discolorations.
    • Chemical-filled grout and tile cleaners can damage the tile and flooring in your home. Cleaners with ammonia can damage the finish on tiles and grout
    • Bleach, although it can remove stains and mold from grout, it also can destroy your grout by causing it to crack and crumble. Bleach gets rid of the color of the mold, but not the mold itself, so you’re not actually cleaning your grout with bleach.
    • Acidic cleaners, like vinegar, will take the shine and finish off the tile and grout. Vinegar and other acidic cleaners can also discolor the grout lines and tile.
    • You should never scrub your grout. If you scrub your grout, you’re wearing away the top layers of the grout and weakening it, which can cause it to crack or break.

Grout Shield sells a Grout Shield Maintenance Cleaner and a Grout & Tile Deep Cleaner both products are great at lifting stains and dirt from the pores in the grout.

    Use Real Grout Cleaner

Stop wrecking your grout and tile with the wrong cleaning supplies. It’s time to invest in a quality grout cleaner. You don’t’ want to wreck your whole floor and have to replace it just because you used the wrong cleaner! Use Grout Shield products that actually lift stains and clean grout. You don’t ant to use a product that just makes the problem.

Grout Shield’s cleaners are easy to use.

  • Grout Problems and How to Fix Them

Grout can make or break the look of room in your home. Dirty grout can make a clean room look dirty and a new room look old. You can scrub for hours and grout can still look dirty – grout is a funny thing like that. Grout is porous, which means once it absorbs all kinds of filth, it can be hard to get that filth out. Regular household cleaners don’t work well when cleaning grout, and many harsh chemicals can wreck and break the grout.

As a grout products company we wanted to share with you some common problems with grout, and what you can do about it to fix it, because grout is everywhere, so you must learn how to properly care for it!

    • Grout is porous. It absorbs anything that it encounters from dirt and mud to food and water.
    • Grout is hard to clean because it sits lower than the tile surrounding it.
    • Grout will darken over time if not properly cleaned and/or sealed.
    • Grout is hard to clean.
    • Epoxy is the easiest grout to clean because it is the least porous grout.
    • Mopping can potentially stain your grout.
    • Mops can leave bacteria in your grout.
    • Grout is a breeding ground for bacteria.
    • Grout can easily be wrecked by steel wool, coarse brushes, acidic cleaners, and bleach.

To sum up, grout is basically hard to clean, but it doesn’t have to be… not with Grout Shield’s grout products.
